How buying a gun in Chicago works

You need a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card before you can acquire a firearm or ammunition in Illinois. The FOID is issued by the Illinois State Police, costs $10, runs ten years and requires you to be 21 or to have a parent or guardian sponsor who is eligible. At the dealer you show ID, complete ATF Form 4473 and pass a background check, and state law makes the dealer hold the gun for at least 72 hours after the sale is applied for. Federal rules still set the dealer counter at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns.

Carrying a gun in Cook County

Illinois is a licence state. The Concealed Carry Licence is issued by the Illinois State Police, not by a county sheriff, and you must be 21, hold a FOID, finish 16 hours of training with an ISP-approved instructor and submit fingerprints. The fee is $150 for residents and $300 for non-residents from the handful of states Illinois treats as substantially similar, and the licence runs five years. Illinois does not honour other states' permits. Schools, government buildings, courts, hospitals, bars, parks, stadiums, public transportation and any posted private property stay off-limits.

Hunting near Chicago

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources runs deer permits by county quota rather than by zone. For 2026-27 the first firearm deer season is November 20, 21 and 22, 2026, the second is December 3 to 6, 2026, and the muzzleloader-only season is December 11, 12 and 13, 2026. Legal firearm deer guns are shotguns with slugs, muzzleloaders, qualifying handguns and, since 2023, single-shot centerfire rifles of .30 calibre or larger meeting the state's cartridge rules. Apply for a Cook County permit through the IDNR lottery and check for leftover permits after the draws.

Cook County firearm deer permits come out of the IDNR county quota, but public hunting inside the county is thin and the forest preserves are closed to it. Most Chicago hunters draw permits in Will, Kankakee, Grundy or LaSalle counties and hunt Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area or Kankakee River State Park.

Cook County enforces its own assault weapons ordinance on top of state law, so what may be sold and delivered here is narrower than in most of Illinois. The nearest shooting on state ground is the hand trap range at Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area near Wilmington, about an hour southwest.

Public shooting ranges near Chicago

Illinois does not run a large network of public rifle ranges. The Department of Natural Resources lists hand trap and archery ranges at state parks, forests and wildlife areas, and the state's one full shooting complex is the World Shooting and Recreational Complex at Sparta. You need a valid FOID to possess a firearm at any of them, and most sites ask you to call before you drive out because hours change with the hunting seasons.
